Biographical

Howard’s focus is on the broad range of claims involving personal injuries including: medical malpractice, nursing home liability, products liability, automobile accidents, premises liability, and he also has experience in civil rights matters, municipal law claims, construction, oil and gas rights, employment matters and many other areas.

Over the course of his 40+ year career, Howie has distinguished himself in the courtroom and is recognized as an outstanding member of the local Bar.  For the vast majority of his career, his litigation practice was devoted to defending medical providers (including nursing homes), manufacturers and insurers. In addition, Howie previously worked at a plaintiff’s personal injury firm where he represented injured parties in medical malpractice and other personal injury claims. He has also served as an assistant city solicitor handling various civil rights cases through to verdict and on appeal.

For more than 25 years Howie has offered his services as a neutral in the civil litigation field. He has been admitted to practice before all Pennsylvania courts and to both the WV and OH bars.  He has also served as a Special Master in the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County providing the Court with assistance on discovery issues and other complex matters.

Memberships & Affiliations

Howie served as the President of the Allegheny County Bar Association from 2011-2012.  The ACBA is an organization with approximately 6500 attorneys practicing in the greater Pittsburgh area. Prior to that service Howie served as a very active member of the Bar Association. He was elected to its Board of Governors for two successive 3-year terms from 2000 to 2006. He had previously been elected to the Judiciary Committee, serving as Chair in 1999.  He continues to serve the ACBA on various committees and sections, including chairing the Senior Lawyer Committee and the Past-President’s Committee.

In addition Howie was elected to membership in the Academy of Trial Lawyers of Allegheny County, an organization that recognizes the top trial lawyers in the County.  Here again, he has served on its Board of Governors and is its current Treasurer.

Howie has been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyer from 2006-2010 and 2014-2023.
